Finding Wireless Solutions That Can Keep Up With Material Handling’s Moving Equipment

Introducing automated material handling solutions into your facility can help streamline your operation, reduce labor costs, and get product out the door more quickly. However, without industrial wireless solutions that keep automated guided vehicles (AGVs) and other equipment connected, some benefits could be missed.

When planning a wireless communications network for your material handling application, consider the layout and challenges of your facility. For any moving equipment, industrial wireless radios are a good option. They can be placed at fixed points throughout the plant, and track AGVs’ movements. Radios with fast access point switchover times are best for any application involving moving equipment; ideally, this will be less than 10 milliseconds. In addition to helping you track AGVs, this level of ultra-fast roaming is also essential in applications involving automated storage and retrieval systems and automotive skillet lines.

Wireless radios can also be paired with a radiating cable to help minimize the impact of interference on communications from your moving equipment. A radiating cable helps by isolating signals in a plant that’s crowded with them; its flexible design also affords it a certain freedom in busier areas.
